Following our post that speculated the potential changes Apple could make to the brand-spanking-new model, we can now weigh up the actual changes after its unveil on Wednesday 9th. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, whilst looking remarkably similar to the previous 6 models, have upgraded a few features to improve quality of use. Aesthetics-wise, a new Rose-Gold colour has been added to the existing colours of Space Gray, Silver and Gold. The new enclosure is made from a new alloy of 7000 Series Aluminium – the same grade, Apple boasts, that is used in the Aerospace industry. The coverglass is also claimed to be the strongest, most durable glass used in any smartphone (although this is yet to be confirmed by our technicians here at iFixed)!
The biggest changes in the iPhone 6s are interior features, such as the new multi-touch technology, 3D Touch. 3D Touch senses how deeply you press the display, allowing you to do essential things more quickly and simply. It gives you real-time feedback in the form of subtle taps from the all-new Taptic Engine – so you’ll not only see what your taps can do, you’ll feel it. 3D Touch also introduces the ‘Peek and Pop’ feature, which lets you preview all kinds of content and even act on it – without having to actually open it. For example, with a light press you can Peek at each email in your inbox. Then when you want to open one, press a little deeper to Pop into it. This feature allows you to Peek at your emails before you open them, get a look at a website before you actually go there, and view the photos you’ve taken while you’re still taking new ones.
Apple has also improved its camera technology on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Its main camera now boasts a 12MP display – allowing for sharp, detailed photos, and 4K videos – up to four times the resolution of 1080p HD video. The front-facing camera has a new 5MP FaceTime HD Camera – allowing improved quality on those all-important selfies!
The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus interior also brags a faster performance. The iPhone 6s is powered by the custom-designed 64-bit A9 chip, meaning that you’ll experience up to 70% faster CPU performance, and up to 90% faster GPU performance for all your favourite graphics-intensive games and apps.
Internet connection has also been improved on the new models. iPhone 6s features LTE Advanced with speeds up to twice as fast as the previous generation. It supports more LTE bands than any other smartphone. And when you’re connected to Wi-Fi, it lets you browse the web and download Apps at speeds up to twice as fast too.
However, all these new specs have come at a cost to the iPhone 6s: a smaller battery pack. Its battery has been downgraded to a 1715mAh battery – much smaller than the 1810mAh in the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6s Plus also has a smaller battery pack, moving from a 2910mAh in the 6 to a 2750mAh pack.
Even with the smaller battery, Apple claims that the new models get the same amount of battery life. The iPhone 6s lists its 3G life at 14 hours, while the iPhone 6s Plus claims a 24-hour battery life. This is apparently due to Apple building battery-saving measures into the new version of iOS. iOS 9 (Set to be released to the public on 16th Sept) boasts features designed to extend battery life on all iPhones.
While not everybody will be able to afford the iPhone 6s’s pre-order price of $649 and the iPhone 6s Plus at $749, the news on iOS 9’s battery-saving technology will be music to all iPhone users’ ears!
