At iFixed, we repair a lot of iPhones that are in need of a little TLC due to cheap chargers and leads. Batteries that run completely dead, fluctuate in power, randomly switch off the iPhone and reduce the overall performance of the iPhone are common.
So, we decided to do a little research:
Apple has previously spoken out about consumers using cheap, third-party chargers with their iPhones, claiming that they can cause worrying safety problems such as electrocutions and burns. However, in a recent report it has also been claimed that non-Apple chargers can damage one of the chips in the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S. iFixed and other companies worldwide have found that cheap third-party iPhone chargers and USB cables can damage the U2 IC chip on the logic board of the iPhone 5, which is responsible for causing the device to fail to start up or charge past 1% battery life when the battery has quickly drained.
It is this U2 IC chip that functions the charge of the iPhone battery and regulates the charging power to the power IC, as well as controlling the sleep button. When this chip is damaged, it fails to work properly and prevents the iPhone from turning back on correctly. It can be broken because of cheap chargers and leads that do not properly regulate voltage, unlike the genuine Apple chargers and leads that regulate the voltage and current to a level that protect your precious iPhone and prevent it from damage.
So, to clarify, we always recommend using a genuine Apple charger if you wish your iPhone to have a long and happy life!
