Here at iFixed we know just as well as anyone that gutting feeling of potentially destroying a brand new £500+ smartphone just from the slip of a hand. Realising it has a cracked screen? Bad. Realising it’s just fallen into a puddle? Disastrous.
Water damage is incredibly common. Kelton Research surveyed 1,000 smartphone users over the age of 18 years old. They found the two most popular ways to kill-off their beloved devices by damage: dropping it down the stairs (29% of people questioned) and spilling a drink on it (also 29%). The next to blame were giving it to a child (25%) and also dropping it down the toilet (20%). This, and other causes such as heavy rain, made water damage a whopping 55% of damages surveyed.
T-Mobile revealed that four out of five claims for its Premium Handset Protection program were due to damage or loss. The top culprits being drops and water damage. Whilst a dropped phone may simply result in a cracked screen – something easily covered by our repairs team, water damage more often than not results in a premature phone death.
Liquid damage to your phone or device is not covered by any manufacturer’s warranty. Therefore, you need to think quickly and follow these simple but important guidelines as soon as your device becomes water damaged:
- Turn your phone off straight away
- Avoid rice! Contrary to popular belief, we find the best way to save a wet phone is by avoiding rice. Whilst the rice may dry out the phone, it also enables the corrosion process. Corrosion is much harder to remove than liquid and the process can therefore become more costly. Cut out the rice and this can play a massive part in saving a wet phone!
- Put the phone in a sealed container – make sure it is airtight – sealing the device prevents and slows the corrosion process and will hopefully save your device
